In addition to rolling all the dice in a pool, there are rules for rolling only part of the dice pool and even completely diceless action resolution.Four Play™ does not use Strength, Intelligence, or similar amorphous terms; physical and mental abilities are graded by the number and size of dice they contribute to the pool. Every body or brain facet has its own group of dice, which the character can expand over time through successful adventuring. Equipment and training also have their own separate dice pools, all of which are combined and successes determined together. There are no "levels" to regulate character development; the player decides exactly what and where any improvement is deployed, whether that be physical training, magical mastery, or enhanced training.Instead of classes, characters choose a package based on their proclivity: Physical, Mental, Social, or Anti-Social. The game provides 16 different packages or allows participants to create their own. A package contains some set competencies while allowing customization. If you want to be a Magician that picks locks, you can be. The magic and psionic rules allow any character to use those abilities to some level, while still keeping true mastery in the hands of devotees (Magicians and Psychics, respectively). The magic and psionics systems allows practitioners to know many powers at a basic level or specialize in a few to gain advanced abilities. Magical and psionic traditions emphasize spells and effects visual and/or tangible in nature. The former draw power from various realms in the natural and unnatural world; the latter from various types of mind/matter interactions.Four Play™ is not just for traditional adventuring sessions; the rules are structured to allow for peaceful, non-violent games.
